We use high quality phosphate ore that has the rock removed and we pelletize the ore with molasses resulting in an easy to use form for direct application.
It has been proven that most soils do benefit from the application of rock phosphates for plant food as it is rich in calcium and micronutrients.
Organic growers generally use 200 to 400 lbs. per acre, per year with the knowledge that mineral phosphates are slow to release and over time the whole system starts working very well.
Example, a large organic rancher close to us has 10,000 acres in organic production with 1500 head organic beef and he has used our phosphate for the past 10 years in a 3 year alfalfa and barley rotation. He applies 500 lbs. per year per acre on his alfalfa to keep his sugar levels in the hay very high and his overall production has been outstanding on both the hay and grain.
Note from Lynn:
The theory of applying rock phosphate every 4
or 5 years is not practical or advised as it
came from the old days when farmers applied
over a ton to the acre. This method was from
the chemical industry and should not be used
by organic farmers.
I feel the proper application rate would be
300 to 500 lbs. a year per acre, to slowly
build up your phosphate levels over time.
Remember an organic method is to have a
biologically alive soil to help release the
phosphate. A proper balance of nutrients
applied is very important. I recommend a
proper soil test each year to establish
nutrient needs.
Rock phosphate and elemental sulfur spread together makes phosphate available in a few weeks.
